Do you need a US company to sell on US TikTok Shop? What to check, and where

The honest answer: TikTok sets the seller requirements for US TikTok Shop, they change over time, and the only reliable source is TikTok Shop Seller Center itself, checked on the day you apply. This article will not give you a requirements checklist, because every third-party checklist we have reviewed, including recent ones, contained at least one stale or unverifiable claim. What we can give you is what to check, where, and the parts that do not change.
Why we will not print a requirements list
Articles about seller eligibility routinely quote specific entity rules, deposit amounts, and ownership requirements sourced from other articles rather than from TikTok. Some were true once; some were never true; none carry a date you can trust. A brand that plans around a stale requirement loses weeks. When an agency publishes those lists, it is marketing dressed as advice. Check the current version in TikTok Shop Seller Center, and have your own accountant or counsel confirm anything with tax or legal weight. We are a marketing agency, and we do not give tax, legal, customs, or regulatory advice.
What to actually verify, in order
- Seller eligibility for your situation, in Seller Center's current onboarding flow: what it asks for is the requirement, whatever any article says.
- Your product category: some categories carry extra requirements or restrictions. Check yours specifically, not categories in general.
- Your fulfilment route: a US TikTok Shop order ships to a US address from stock already inside the country. Decide who holds your inventory in the US before you plan anything else.
- Payout and banking, for your specific corporate setup, in Seller Center, not in a forum thread.
The part that never changes
Whatever the paperwork requirements are in any given quarter, the operational precondition is constant: your product must be physically in a US warehouse before the growth machine works. Sample seeding ships from US inventory to US creators; orders ship to US buyers; speed is the whole game. If your stock is overseas, landing it with a US 3PL is step zero, and it happens before any agency, including us, is useful.
Where an agency fits, and where it cannot
An agency operates the shop once it exists: listings, creators, samples, content, ads. It cannot legitimately register your company, obtain tax IDs, open bank accounts, or act as importer of record, and one that offers to should worry you. The full picture of working with us from outside the US, including how pricing works and what changes versus a US brand (less than you think), is on our TikTok Shop agency for international brands page.
